Helpful Tips For You and Your Dog
WATER -- WATER -- WATER
Carry lots of water!!!!!
One of the ways I carry lots of water is to carry the small plastic pop bottles with screw lids. Rinse them out good and put 3-4 in your hunting vest and give several to your hunting partners.  I also carry a small cloth bowl for the dog to drink out of.  Water is not wasted this way and the balance they don’t drink can be poured on the dog to cool them off. On hot days, my dog will drink as much as a liter of water and wear 2-3 liters of water to keep them cooled off.
I have seen people I have worked with carrying small squirt bottles.  This is fine for washing feathers out of the mouth, but sometimes the dogs choke on the water. I have found that too much water ends up on the ground.  I don’t have the room or strength to pack the extra water to pour on the ground.
In cold weather the dog also needs lots of water.  We have seen people packing hot water bottles.  Putting hot water in the bottle keeps you warm, but it also gives the dog warmer water to drink.  They will drink more water if it is not ice cold.

RESTING YOUR DOG DURING HUNTING

When your dog is showing signs of fatigue or panting too hard, stop and give your dog a rest break.  When you ask your dog to sit or lay and rest, you and hunting partners also need to sit on the ground.  Otherwise your dog feels that you are still hunting and they need to be hunting also.
If you give your dog a rest before hitting birdie looking cover, the hunt might be more productive.

SKUNKS

After living in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and having confrontations between skunks and my hunting dogs, this is one of the better de-skunking formulas I have found.
Mix a quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of liquid soap.
Bathe the dog in the solution and apply a tap water rinse.
This solution looses its effectiveness very quickly, so throw out any unused solution after use.
